What is IELTS?.

IELTS – It stands for International English Language Test System which is the test established in 1989 to certify the proficiency of the non- native speakers of English. It is a popular test being accepted by many developed countries worldwide. Top Universities of America, Australia and Europe consider the valid score of IELTS. This test is conducted in offline mode.

What is PTE?.

PTE – PTE on the other hand is The Pearson Test of English that was introduced in 2009. It is one of the most recent examinations to test and certify the proficiency of non-native candidates of the English language. Unlike IELTS it is conducted as an online test held by QCA and Edexcel, the largest examining body of UK.

The difference between the marking pattern as well as modules of both the exams IELTS and PTE-

Both have four modules but in IELTS you can read and write on paper while in case of PTE you have to attempt the test on a computer. The scores for IELTS range from 1 to 9 bands whereas for PTE it ranges from points 10 to 90. The fees for both the tests is the same.

Four Modules of IELTS and PTE -

Listening – If we talk about the listening module then in case of IELTS listening you have to attempt 4 sections which includes question types of summary, fill in the blanks and multiple choice. On the other hand, in PTE listening you have to summarize the audio text, highlight the summary, guess the right missing word, choose the incorrect words.    

Reading – For the reading module it is same for both and you can choose either of the two. The only difference is that IELTS reading is in offline mode but PTE reading is in online mode.

Writing – It is considered that the IELTS writing is more difficult than the PTE writing. In IELTS writing there are two tasks which you write on paper. In PTE writing, you get to type your answers.


Speaking – It is believed that PTE speaking is easier as compared to IELTS speaking. In case of IELTS speaking, you get to speak with a person face to face while in PTE speaking you practically talk to a computer.

Result Declaration in both the exams (PTE & IELTS)-

IELTS result is generally declared after at least 14 days of the exam and on contrary PTE gets you your result within the week of your test.
